The Role
Black Semiconductor is seeking a Photonic Designer: Multiplexing EPIC Designer (f/m/d) to design and simulate high-speed WDM/DWDM optical transceiver systems, bridging component-level photonic design with system-level architecture. You will be responsible for developing integrated solutions that span electronic-photonic co-design, multi-domain modeling, and system performance optimization
To join our team, you should be excited to
  • Design WDM/DWDM multiplexers and system-level link photonic interfaces
  • Lead co-design and co-simulation of Electronic-Photonic Integrated Circuits (EPICs)
  • Integrate passive and active photonic components into system-level models
  • Develop and analyze link budgets, signal integrity, and performance trade-offs
  • Perform multi-domain simulation across optical, electrical, and thermal domains
  • Innovate in optical I/O coupler design, including fiber-to-chip and chip-to-chip interfaces
  • Design for testability (DFT), fabrication tolerance, and temperature variation resilience
  • Collaborate across layout, process integration, packaging, and characterization 
Your Qualifications
  • M.S. or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Systems Engineering, Optical Engineering, or a related field
  • 3+ years of experience in integrated photonics
  • Proficiency in WDM/DWDM design, link budget modeling, and system-level simulation
  • Experience with EPIC co-design using tools such as Synopsys OptoDesigner and Cadence Spectre
  • Strong understanding of high-speed circuit design and signal integrity principles, electronic-photonic interfaces, and clock data recovery (CDR)
  • Experience with simulation tools; Lumerical MODE, FDTD, INTERCONNECT, COMSOL Multiphysics
  • Hands-on experience with fiber-to-chip coupling, passive photonic design, and polarization management
  • Competency in photonic layout tools (gdsfactory, Nazca, OptoDesigner) and Git-based workflows
  • Programming proficiency in Python and Git version control
  • Experience with test structure development and optical characterization equipment is a plus
