The Role
Black Semiconductor is seeking a Graphene Photonic Component Designer (f/m/d) to play a key role in building our graphene-based, high-speed optical transceiver platform. You will contribute to the design and simulation of both passive and active photonic components. Your work will span from designing fiber-to-chip and chip-to-chip coupling structures in silicon nitride, to the development of advanced graphene electro-optic modulators, photodetectors, and polarization control components  
To join our team, you should be excited to
  • Develop graphene-based photonic components, including modulators, photodetectors, resonant structures, and active gratings, for a high-speed optical transceiver platform
  • Design passive photonic components in silicon nitride (e.g., for polarization control, fiber-to-chip and chip-to-chip coupling)
  • Drive innovation in 2D material device structures, focusing on efficiency, integrability, and novel photonic functionalities
  • Create and maintain PDK building blocks, ensuring layout quality and up-to-date libraries for photonic design workflows
  • Design test structures to validate models and verify performance across fabrication and environmental variations
  • Optimize component designs using fault-tolerant principles and best practices in Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Functionality (DFF), including mask layout and synthesis
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with the process integration team on feasibility studies (e.g., for loss and bandwidth improvements), with the packaging designer on coupling interfaces, and with the characterization team on statistical data analysis
Your Qualifications
  • M.Sc. or Ph.D. in Electrical EngineeringOptical EngineeringPhysics, or a related field
  • 3+ years of experience in integrated photonics
  • Proficiency in photonic simulation tools: Lumerical MODE/FDTD, COMSOL or equivalent
  • Familiarity with graphene device simulation tools and 2D materials modeling software
  • Knowledge of electro-optic simulation platforms
  • Programming skills in Python and working knowledge of Git for version control
  • Experience with photonic layout tools such as gdsfactoryNazca, or OptoDesigner
  • Hands-on experience with optical characterization equipment is a plus
